This could be the last fire season for the Martin Mars four-engine cargo transport seaplane that has the largest payload capacity of water bombers in the world, carrying 27,276 litres and fire-suppressing foam.

Dr. Dominik Kulakowski conducted research on insect outbreaks and wildland fires in Rocky Mountain forests for fifteen years.  He found catastrophic fire is not an inevitable outcome of bark beetle outbreaks but that climate is more important to a fire risk and insect outbreaks appear to have comparatively little or no influence.

The US Forest Service will have access to several models of aircraft, including a converted DC-10 jumbo jet, which can carry about five times as much flame-resistant liquid as any aircraft in regular use.  Each of the planes can carry more than 3,000 gallons of slurry while the DC-10 can hold as much as 11,600 gallons.

The women were part of a group of 187 who had passed the written test in 2006 but were later denied jobs because they failed the department’s physical abilities test.  Many will now have the opportunity to reapply.
