The Canadian Marketing Association has honoured the London Fire Department and its analytics partner Environics Analytics with a prestigious national award. Using customer segmentation and data analytics expertise provided by Environics Analytics, the fire department’s 2013 campaign identified those who caused the most fires and developed a targeted marketing campaign designed to reduce risky behaviours. Last year, residential fires in London dropped by 22 percent.

The 2007 Moonlight Fire in California claimed 65,000 acres. The idea was that government officials — state and federal investigators and prosecutors, could be counted on to conduct an honest investigation and ethical prosecution of those responsible for starting a forest fire. “Corrupt and tainted,” “egregious,” “reprehensible” and “governmental corruption” are the words of California Superior Court stemming from Cal Fire’s fraud-filled investigation.

A group of researchers in Beijing are testing a new kind of equipment that, if successful, could significantly add to the chances of survival in a high-rise fire. The equipment, now installed in a 15-story, 40-meter-high, university dormitory, can carry four to five people each trip, from any floor, safely to the ground. Researchers say it’s a fire-proof elevator that operates without electricity.

On Nov. 3, 2014 a fire in London, Ontario claimed the life of group home tenant Dave MacPherson, 72. Property owner Dharma Meetun and group home operator Keith Charles face 26 Fire Protection and Prevention Act charges between them. The fire department was headed to the building for its fifth inspection in as many days to see if fire code violations had been fixed when the fatal fire broke out. City bylaw inspectors visited the property up to a dozen times in the last year after receiving complaints. The operator, Charles, had been given until February to move or get proper zoning for a group home before the fire took place.

The fire departments of The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam are calling on citizens to first try extinguishing fires themselves over New Year’s before calling the fire department. This is because they are too busy during the turning of the year to help everywhere. On a normal day the fire department in The Hague gets around 70 reports of fires. But over New Year’s they sometimes get up to 1,500 reports in a few hours. According to the fire department, there are lots of fires that people can extinguish themselves.

To keep a promise, Jasper fire chief Greg Van Tighem plans to cycle across the roof of Canada in March. “In early 2013, I set the target of raising $93,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada in each of the next three years by making an annual epic bike ride,” he says. In April of that year he completed his first ride, the nearly 3000-kilometre length of Highway 93 from Wickenburg, Arizona to Jasper. It raised more than $96,000 and made the chief the top MS fundraiser in Canada.

One hundred and twenty-five people in the United States died in fires during the 14 days from November 9 through November 22. At least 33 were senior citizens and 20 were children under 14 and another 33 are listed as their age unknown. This brings to over 2,050 the number of people killed in home fires so far this year, according to the US Fire Administration, which tracks press reports of fire deaths.

B.C. Hydro insists its spiffy new smart meters have not caused any fires even though the technology has been blamed for blazes in other jurisdictions. That includes Saskatchewan, where the government just decided to get rid of smart meters after a series of electrical fires there.
B.C. Hydro says it uses a different brand of meter from SaskPower, and no fires have been confirmed here. Luc De Beir begs to differ. He blames a smart meter for a February 2013 fire at his summer home near Prince George. The story got stranger from there.

Formed by the Fire Prevention Officers Association, HEAT is a conglomerate of organizations, including local fire departments, Island Health, SPCA and various non-profit organizations. “From the point of view of fire departments, when you have so much property in a small area, we call that a fuel load. If a fire does occur, it’s very hard to put out because you have that much more fuel load in there,” said Megan Sabell, inspector with the Victoria Fire Department, adding that the fire will also burn much hotter and faster. “It’s really dangerous for a firefighter to try and enter a suite like that.”

Security expert Mark Macy was showing off his company’s remote building monitor system to a colleague over breakfast in Gatineau on Oct. 22 when news broke that a lone gunman had killed a soldier and attacked the Parliament Buildings. Though the portal is designed for property managers, it could also be used by police, fire and paramedic services to access critical information about a property, as long as they are designated by building managers as trusted third parties.
